Tonight’s Topic

The Joyful Moon

Monday this week is crawler airlocks: how you can read Conrad’s age in a row of docks. Tuesday is Milton Johnson, the man in the corner who was already a Mason. Wednesday is the rover in the dark, and the core you do not get for free. Tonight is the title that sits over the whole later book.

Mask of the Joyful Moon does not open on the Moon. It opens on Earth, with Gen who spoke to Uncle Jay the night before and a doctor who says that is impossible. The scans show a barrier of plaques throughout his brain. Advanced dementia takes years. Anti-plaque treatment will take months or years to clear. Rapid onset means something else is going on besides the basic disease. Gen is not on Conrad yet. The mask is already in the room.

The novel’s title is not a logo. It is the claim that the Moon is wearing something, or hiding something, or both. Plaques in a brain that should not have appeared overnight. Identities that do not match the name on the tab — Milt Johnson, Morris’s younger brother, twenty years in Nils’s business before anyone at the station is told. A fresh badge on an old Moon. Mercenaries who once seized the habitats. A family war that prefers problems handled quietly and does not stay on Earth.

Hidden identities are not only Mason business. They are how the frontier keeps working when the log is blank. Nils tells tourists a fabrication. Milt finances a return and will not let Mark’s name in the door. Gen counts thugs for Granger and still cannot get a statement anyone will sign. The joyful thing — whatever is under the trails, the transmissions, the song Mark hears in an Idaho ER that nobody else can hear — does not arrive as a briefing. It arrives as a mismatch: the scan that cannot be, the partner who was never only a prospector, the Moon that will not leave the secret in the dark.

Conrad is three days from backup. Local law is a hangover and a count. The Joyful Moon is what you discuss when the hardware essays are done and the question left on the table is not how an airlock cycles, but what the station is actually for — and who is wearing the face that gets to decide.

Questions for the Room

  • Uncle Jay spoke to Gen the night before. The plaques say that is impossible. Do you trust the call, the scan, or that something else is using a brain as a mask?
  • Milt hid a Mason name at Nils’s table for twenty years. Is that survival, family war, or the same instinct as Morgan’s Road — a story that keeps the real ice off the tourist floor?
  • Gen arrives as reluctant law where mercenaries once seized control. What does a fresh badge actually change on an old Moon when Earth still takes three days?
  • The title says the Moon seems determined to reveal a joyful secret. Where in the sequence do you hear it first — the ER, the bar, the trails, the transmissions — and what would it cost Conrad if it were true?
