Character Spotlight – Milton Johnson
Nils’s friend in the bar’s corner — haggard, heading for Tycho, and tired of hearing himself turned into Morgan.
Moon deputy hard science fiction from the trails around Conrad Station.
Thunder Moon Tussle opens on Milton Johnson the way the station actually knows him: a corner table, a covered glass, three-day gray stubble, and a voice low enough that Alex, watching the hockey, does not have to hear it. He is heading down to Tycho. He might have a job for Nils in a few days. In the meantime, try to stay clear of that deputy.
He has been saying versions of that sentence for years. Nils has been ignoring them for just as long.
Who They Are
Milt is not a deputy and not a station regular in the Cooter mold. He is Nils’s partner in the work that happened before Conrad was a hub — habitats north of the road, a business that always seemed to have another interested investor, a man who left you wondering about his intentions even when he was buying the round.
The rule he lives by is not Rule One, though he will honor Survive when it counts. His rule is access. Who gets it? Who does not? He hates the Morgan story because Nils dressed their ice as a lunch pail and a stranger. He tells Nils to tell the actual story, then grins, because they both know the northern road is not for tourists. Despite financing a return to the Moon, he will flatly refuse Mark Mason’s money. Yellowstone conspiracies, family baggage, a son who looks only at himself: Milt would rather make the job twice as hard as let that name in the door.
Gray hair. Haggard when something is going on. A grin that is not the same as Nils’s untrustworthy one. He talks over people when he needs a datapad retrieved and a calendar cleared. He is very good at not letting Nils finish a sentence.
Across the Sequence
The earliest Milt in the chronicle is a rookie. In “Golf and Outgassing” he is on the crawler with Colonel Annie MacInturner at Fra Mauro, stating — not advocating — that she has the authority, then finding Shepard’s golf ball in the dust as if the site could still surprise them. Mass is not weight. He learned it there, as a mismatched crew-mate, before he ever sat in Alex’s corner.
In “CME” he is not in the cellar. He is in London. Nils still uses him: a GNR antenna in Alaska, retransmitting four hundred thousand kilometers to a woman behind a mountain. Physical help cannot make the eight minutes. A voice on a dish can. That is Milt as network, not as body in the hab.
Thunder Moon Tussle is the bar, the Tycho job, Hab 18, the northern road they built twenty years earlier, and the warning about Deputy Miller that Nils will not take. Mask of the Joyful Moon is an unpaid bill. Granger told Gen early: Milton Johnson held a secret. Monitor him. Nils did not know for twenty years. Doc cannot believe it and then can, because Milt never gave a straight answer. The later book puts a cave-in at Aristarchus on the table. That death is not the spotlight. The spotlight is that the man in the corner was already hiding it, and already inside the prospector network the whole time.
The Longer Shadow
Conrad inherits two things from Milt Johnson.
One is practical: the northern habitats, the ice that is real even when the lunch pail is not, the Tycho run, the antenna when the warning net fails. It was already drinking whiskey through a straw and telling Nils to stay clear.
People who last here learn which of Milt’s jobs to take and which of his silences to file. Nils took the job. Gen was told to watch him. The tourists still hear Morgan Johnson and do not know they are hearing a man who would have hated the name.
He is not the law. He is the friend who already knows more than the badge, and who will not say why.
