Permanent Shadow
Monday this week is straw-cups: a small hardware lesson at one-sixth g. Tonight is the other end of the same physics. Conrad sits on the equatorial belt, in Oceanus Procellarum, under a Sun that rises and sets on a two-week clock. The ice is not there. The ice is in the dark.
In Descent into Darkness, Nils Carmike is not yet the man telling tourist stories for a tab. He is a reprimanded astronaut who studied PSR ice retrieval, picked by commander Mose because the Astronaut Office guarantee still holds: what I say goes. Including crew. The target is a permanent shadowed region — a crater floor that never sees the Sun, cold enough that Mose, looking down into Shackleton, has to say it out loud: colder than Pluto, and still close enough to Texas that the comparison feels wrong.
A robot rover already went down. It failed to return a core. It is still down there. The back room wants three EVAs. Vargas wants the rover. Mose cuts it: the mission is the core sample. Go after the rover and you may not get a core. Nils splits the difference the way a man who has already lost one Moon flight splits differences — land near the rover, take a core, hook up, drive out. Polar lighting, polar thermal, polar comms. None of it is the belt they already know.
They land. Houston gives them a stable six hours. Nils looks out at a rough circle of light around the rim and a floor blacker than the stars. The lander’s own shadow runs a hundred meters toward the dark. He calls it the mouth of Hell after he checks that the microphones are not on VOX.
The story stops on the rim, with the work still below them. That is the discussion. Not the montage. The first time the Fabulae Lunae sequence goes into a crater that never sees the Sun, and what you are willing to spend before you build a station on the answer.
Conrad still lives on recycling, rationing, and argument. Under Tsiolkovsky, water is easily half the consumable mass a person requires. A gallon a day that does not have to be shipped changes the logistics of staying. Fail to sample the dark, and every radiation shelter and power farm at the pole is a bet you have not earned. The real ice detections Nils will one day dress up as someone else’s lunchbox sit downstream of that first look.

- If the core is the mission and the rover is already lost, which one do you spend people on — and who gets to decide when Earth is three days away?
- Mose is seventy-one and still flying. Nils has a reprimand and a polar specialty. Is “what I say goes” how you want a first descent into permanent shadow run?
- Conrad still lives on imported margins. How much of the later frontier — claims, cold traps, corporate ice — is downstream of a crater that never sees the Sun?
- Nils names the floor the mouth of Hell with the VOX off. What do you call a place that is colder than Pluto and still a logistics problem for Texas?
