Character Spotlight – Nils Carmike
If you’ve spent any time at Conrad Station, you’ve probably heard of Nils Carmike.
He’s the wiry prospector with the quick grin, the endless stories, and the knack for being in the right place (or the wrong place) when things go sideways. Nils isn’t a hero in the classic sense — he’s a survivor, a storyteller, and the man who keeps the frontier’s oral history alive one straw-cup beer at a time.
Where You’ve Met Him
Nils first made his mark in the short stories and then became a central voice in the longer novels:
- “Descent into Darkness” — An early look at the man and the dangers he faces on his first trip to the Moon.
- “CME” — Nils dealing with one of the Moon’s most unforgiving natural threats. Nils steps up with ideas to save another prospector.
- Thunder Moon Tussle — the book that truly introduced him to readers as he fights to return to the Moon and stay. Here we meet Nils in full: spinning tales at Alex’s Bar, navigating prospector politics, and surviving the chaos that swirls around Conrad Station. And we get an insight into his complicated backstory.
- Mask of the Joyful Moon — Nils returns, and is seen through Gen’s eyes. The character is recognizable, but we see him from the perspective of someone who doesn’t know what he is thinking.
Even when he’s not on the page, his influence lingers. The events of The Lunadyne Incident carry his fingerprints — decisions he made, stories he told, and the quiet ways he helped (or complicated) the fragile peace of the early station days.
Why Nils Matters
Nils Carmike is the living memory of Conrad Station. While deputies enforce the law and corporations chase profits, Nils remembers why people came to the Moon in the first place — and what it costs to stay. His stories keep the past alive, warn the next generation, and occasionally light the fuse for the next crisis.
He’s not the loudest voice in the room. He’s the one who leans in and says, “You won’t believe what happened next…” — and somehow, you always do.

Stories
The stories of Torn MacAlester are science fiction, where the science is well-grounded. I intentionally made any deviations for speculative purposes. To maintain maximum realism, I restrict the scope of these deviations.
Articles
I write articles of science fact and science fiction. The articles here span the knowledge of modern science and the speculations of fiction. I try to caveat everything that is an assumption. You will find articles about spaceflight, the possibilities of alien contact, and descriptions of technology used in my stories.
