Char­ac­ter Spot­light – Nils Carmike

If you’ve spent any time at Con­rad Sta­tion, you’ve prob­a­bly heard of Nils Carmike.

He’s the wiry prospec­tor with the quick grin, the end­less sto­ries, and the knack for being in the right place (or the wrong place) when things go side­ways. Nils isn’t a hero in the clas­sic sense — he’s a sur­vivor, a sto­ry­teller, and the man who keeps the frontier’s oral his­to­ry alive one straw-cup beer at a time.

Where You’ve Met Him

Nils first made his mark in the short sto­ries and then became a cen­tral voice in the longer novels:

• “Descent into Dark­ness” — An ear­ly look at the man and the dan­gers he faces on his first trip to the Moon.
• “CME” — Nils deal­ing with one of the Moon’s most unfor­giv­ing nat­ur­al threats. Nils steps up with ideas to save anoth­er prospector.
• Thun­der Moon Tus­sle — the book that tru­ly intro­duced him to read­ers as he fights to return to the Moon and stay. Here we meet Nils in full: spin­ning tales at Alex’s Bar, nav­i­gat­ing prospec­tor pol­i­tics, and sur­viv­ing the chaos that swirls around Con­rad Sta­tion. And we get an insight into his com­pli­cat­ed backstory.
• Mask of the Joy­ful Moon — Nils returns, and is seen through Gen’s eyes. The char­ac­ter is rec­og­niz­able, but we see him from the per­spec­tive of some­one who doesn’t know what he is thinking.

Even when he’s not on the page, his influ­ence lingers. The events of The Luna­dyne Inci­dent car­ry his fin­ger­prints — deci­sions he made, sto­ries he told, and the qui­et ways he helped (or com­pli­cat­ed) the frag­ile peace of the ear­ly sta­tion days.

Why Nils Matters

Nils Carmike is the liv­ing mem­o­ry of Con­rad Sta­tion. While deputies enforce the law and cor­po­ra­tions chase prof­its, Nils remem­bers why peo­ple came to the Moon in the first place — and what it costs to stay. His sto­ries keep the past alive, warn the next gen­er­a­tion, and occa­sion­al­ly light the fuse for the next crisis.

He’s not the loud­est voice in the room. He’s the one who leans in and says, “You won’t believe what hap­pened next…” — and some­how, you always do.
