Lore & Secrets — Put the Lunokhod Back
Lore & Secrets – Put the Lunokhod Back
A Moon Dispatch
Del does not arrest Cooter for taking the Lunokhod off its historical site. He tells him to put it back. Last century or not, Del says it still belongs to the Russians.
Lunar prospector science fiction: claims, volatiles, and the people who work the surface.
The file opens on a rover that already has an owner. Lunokhod is last-century hardware at a lunar historical site. Someone removed it. Sheriff Del Anderson knows who. He does not file a charge. He tells Jim Ross — Cooter — to put it back. If no one finds it where it should not be, there is no reason to think anyone messed with it. That is the institutional memory. Who wants the site left alone? Who already has the rover? What the sheriff decides is enough.
What Is Known
Del walks into Doc Keller’s clinic, and the first question is not the strike. Did you put back the items I asked you to? Cooter says he did. He also wants to know if the Russians actually wanted it put back. Del’s answer is the whole unofficial inventory in one line. It doesn’t matter. Even if it’s from the last century, it still belongs to them.
Doc cuts the conversation before it becomes a briefing. She is sure the sheriff did not come down to hear Cooter’s alien conspiracy theories. The rover’s talk and the theories sit in the same doorway. Del is only interested in one of them. The official story, if anyone asked, would be a historical site left undisturbed. The useful story is a man told to return what he took, and a sheriff who will not file the taking if the return holds.
The same man later raided the Apollo 15 site at Hadley because he was sure there was a secret base nearby. Some of the junk at Cooterville is from Apollo. The authorities did not arrest him. Prospectors told him to stay away from the other sites and added ‘in a box’ for emphasis. Two sites. Two dispositions. One got a quiet order. The other got a warning from the people who work on the surface.
What Is Still Unpaid
Whether the Russians ever asked remains unanswered. Del does not need them to. The ownership is the point, not the request. That sentence closes the clinic conversation and leaves the file open. Did Cooter put the right pieces back? Did anyone check? If no one found it where it should not be, the question does not get asked. That is the debt: an artifact returned based upon the honor of a man who also believes in secret bases, and a sheriff who would rather not have the paperwork.
The Hadley raid sits next to it and is not the same file. No one told him to put that one back in the same voice. The Lunokhod is the case Del was willing to settle with a sentence. The rest of the last-century hardware on the surface is the inventory nobody has finished.
Why Conrad Remains Useful
Conrad remains useful because a lunar historical site is not only history. It is a claim that still has an owner, on ground prospectors cross and corporations file. Water, landing rights, a weekly list of who arrived — all of them are easier to lean on if the station already knows how to dispose of a taking without Earth. Del’s method is the method. Put it back. Do not arrest. If the return holds, the log stays blank.
The three-day lag is why it works. No one is coming for a rover. A deputy who inherits the station inherits the same choice. Gen Miller will meet Cooter at a hab full of pieces that look older than they should. She will have to decide which of his sentences to file and which to act on. The use is not the reveal. A sheriff can still use an unpaid ownership file to replace last-century hardware quietly before someone else writes a stronger claim next to it.
Who checks whether the Lunokhod is actually where Del told him to leave it?
