Lunar Signals – The Story Nils Tells Tourists
Morgan’s Road is a fabrication. The ice is real. The man with the lunchbox is not.

The Story Nils Tells Tourists
Physical help is three days away. That is the lag. What fills the gap is not law and not a sample bag. It is a story told in Alex’s Bar for the price of a straw-cup, while Earthlight hits the dance floor and Milton Johnson asks Nils to retire the silly one.
Nils made Morgan Johnson spur-of-the-moment because tourists wanted a prospector’s tale and Alex wants fun rather than reasonable. In the version that pays the tab, a man leaves an ice sample in a lunch pail and Nils follows tracks across the surface. Milton is in the room. The last name is still Johnson. The ice that Conrad actually drinks and shields with did not arrive that way. Some of it sits downstream of a polar core and a commander who would not let the mission become a rover retrieval. Some of it sits in work Milton did that Nils will not put on the record for a tourist.
The fabrication is the code. On a station where backup cannot walk through the hatch, the map of what is valuable has to travel as folklore or it travels as a corporate claim. Morgan’s Road is the romantic version. The prologue of Thunder Moon Tussle is the argument about whether to tell the actual story. By Mask of the Joyful Moon the lunchbox is already in circulation: deputies and prospectors move through a culture that has absorbed Nils’s lessons whether they sat through the performance or not. The feud is small and local—Milt heading for Tycho, tired of hearing himself turned into Morgan—and it still matters because ice is mass, mass is fuel and shelter, and a story that names the wrong man can hide the right crater long enough for someone to stay alive. It can also hide it long enough for Lunadyne to file the claim.
