The first door is detection.

We hear them, or we find some­thing they left. Leak­age. Bea­cons. Arti­facts. And the sci­en­tif­ic lim­its that decide whether any of those is even possible.

Sagan’s Con­tact begins here. Clarke’s 2001 and Ren­dezvous with Rama live here. The pro­to-mol­e­cule in Leviathan Wakes is a Case I object that refus­es to stay polite.

I mapped the five cas­es in 2023. In April 2025 I opened this door all the way. This week I came back to the map:
