Hard Tech & Science – The Three-Day Lag
On the Moon, the speed of light is not the limiting factor. The speed of rockets is.
You can tell Earth you have a problem almost immediately. What you cannot do is make physical help arrive any faster than the laws of orbital mechanics allow. Even if the needed parts, medical supplies, water, or personnel are already sitting on a launch pad and ready to go, it still takes roughly three days for anything material to reach Conrad Station.
That three-day transportation lag is one of the quiet, unyielding facts of lunar life. It shapes almost everything.
Advice Is Fast. Help Is Not.
Communications can be near-real-time or delayed by only a few seconds. A distressed station can describe a failing recycler, a medical emergency, a structural breach, or a brewing confrontation. Earth can reply with advice, schematics, moral support, or corporate instructions.
None of that arrives as a physical object.
The lag means that when something breaks, the people already on the Moon must solve it with what they have. When a conflict escalates, the local deputy cannot wait for reinforcements. When water reserves drop or a critical component fails, the station has three full days of self-reliance before any new mass can appear.
In Thunder Moon Tussle and Mask of the Joyful Moon, this constraint sits underneath every major decision. Characters do not talk about it constantly because they have already absorbed it into their thinking. It is simply the background condition of existence.
How the Lag Shapes Power
Corporate interests understand the lag intimately. A delayed shipment, a slow-walked replacement part, or a carefully timed “review” of a contract can create pressure that local authorities cannot easily counter. By the time Earth-side decision-makers claim they are responding, the local situation has often already forced a conclusion.
Therefore, Gen Miller’s position is so difficult. She is the only law this side of the lag. There is no rapid-response team. There is no quick escalation path that brings real capability. The people already there must maintain whatever order exists at Conrad Station with the resources already on hand.
Prospectors, station crew, and corporate operatives all calculate within the same three-day window. Some use it as cover. Others simply endure it.
Survival Mathematics
The lag also changes the risk assessment. A medical emergency that would be survivable on Earth with a hospital thirty minutes away becomes a different equation when the nearest advanced care is three days of transit away. On Earth, people would swap out equipment overnight, but in space, they must repair, jury-rig, or do without it.
This is one reason the water economy is so tightly managed, why habitats still creak with age, and why people watch the performance of life-support systems with such intensity. There is very little margin for the external rescue terrestrial societies take for granted.
The Quiet Reality
The three-day lag is not dramatic. It does not arrive with alarms or speeches. It simply waits. Every plan, every confrontation, every technical failure, and every quiet act of courage at Conrad Station unfolds inside that window.
You can call for help. Help is coming. It will just take three days to get here.
In the meantime, the Moon does not wait.
