First Contact Revisited
The five ways a story can meet the other. A map I still use.

First contact is one mainstay of science fiction. In November 2023, I sat down, put on the scientist hat, and tried to sort the theme into cases I could actually use for world-building.

This post is a door back into that piece, and a reminder of the work that still sits on the other side of it.
Why the article exists
I did not write it as a catalog of famous books. I wrote it because I needed a working map.
If I put an alien in a story, I want to know who heard whom first, how the signal or the ship got there, and what the physics will and will not allow. Faster-than-light travel is an assumption, not a fact. The Alcubierre warp drive and the Einstein–Rosen bridge are both rooted in general relativity, and both remain theoretical. For the cases that need FTL, I assume one of those two exists. For the cases that do not, light speed is the law.
That map sits on three earlier articles:
- the Fermi Paradox — why the sky looks empty
- the Kardashev Scale — how much power a civilization can spend, and therefore how far it can shout
- the Drake Equation — how many civilizations might be out there to shout at all
Fermi tells you contact may be rare, or that we are early. Kardashev tells you what is detectable. Drake tells you how many players might be on the board. None of those three answers the story question by itself. First contact is the moment those numbers become a scene.
The announcement that always leaves first
Radio does not wait for starships.
A signal leaves a world at the speed of light and keeps going. Early experiments are often too weak to rise above the background noise of the universe. A planet’s ionosphere will bounce some frequencies back. To announce that another civilization can hear, you need a signal strong enough that it punches through that ceiling and people still find it against the hiss.
Carl Sagan used the 1936 Olympic Games television broadcast from Germany as humanity’s first loud enough shout. In Contact, that is what the others hear. As of 2026, that bubble is about ninety light-years across. Until someone builds FTL, the furthest reach of humanity is always behind that expanding sphere.
For any other species, replace 1936 with y₀ — the year of their first significant broadcast. Whoever hears the other first has the advantage. That single fact sorts most first-contact stories before a single alien walks onstage.
The five cases
In every case below, humanity assumes it has not yet been contacted. Swap “humanity” for civilization X and the same case still holds.
I. Humanity detects alien transmissions or alien artifacts.
We hear them, or we find something they left. Sagan’s Contact begins here. Clarke’s 2001 and Rendezvous with Rama live here. The proto-molecule in Leviathan Wakes is a Case I object that refuses to stay polite.
II. Aliens detect humanity and respond to our transmissions.
They heard y₀ first. Their answer comes back as a signal, not as a landing. Sagan’s Contact turns into this case the moment the Vega transmission proves to be our own broadcast, amplified, with a message folded in.
III. Aliens detect humanity and visit.
They heard us, and they come. Wells made it violent in The War of the Worlds. Clarke made it quieter and stranger in Childhood’s End.
IV. Humanity detects aliens, then visits them.
We hear them, or see them, and we go. This case needs FTL or a very long clock. Niven and Pournelle’s The Mote in God’s Eye is a clean example.
V. Neither side knows the other exists, and they meet in deep space or on a neutral world.
No broadcast has done the introductions. Murray Leinster named the case in the 1945 Astounding story “First Contact.” Two ships, two unknowns, and no home field.
Cases I through III do not require FTL. Cases IV and V usually do, or they require patience measured in centuries.

That piece stays with detection: leakage, beacons, artifacts, and the scientific limits that decide whether a Case I event is even possible. The original 2023 article promised five such explorations, and then a first-contact story written for each case. Case I is on the board. Cases II through V, and the five stories, are still the work ahead.
The framework has not aged out. If anything, it is more useful now. The lunar stories I write live inside a near-future that has not met anyone. That is a choice, not an accident. First contact is a different kind of frontier, and I will not drop an alien into a story until I know which of the five doors it came through.
