Hard Tech & Science – Life Support Margins Air, water, power, and the narrow buffers that keep the habitats viable through a full lunar night
At Conrad Station, life support is not a single system. It is a set of overlapping margins.
Air. Water. Power. Heat. Each one has to stay inside a workable band for fourteen Earth days of darkness, and for the bright two-week day that follows. When any margin collapses, the others come under immediate pressure. The station does not get to wait for Earth to solve the problem. Physical help is three days away even under ideal conditions.
Oxygen and the Crackers
Breathable air is the most obvious requirement and one of the easiest to take for granted until it is threatened. Conrad Station does not rely on an endless imported supply. It runs closed-loop systems that recover and reprocess what the crew exhales, supplemented by equipment that can generate additional oxygen when the balance requires it.
In Thunder Moon Tussle those generators appear as the oxygen crackers — practical, hard-used pieces of station infrastructure that break down available feedstock to liberate breathable O₂. They are not glamorous. They are critical. When the crackers are healthy, the air margin stays wide enough that people can focus on other problems. When they degrade, or when demand spikes, the entire station feels the constraint. Consumables, power draw, and contingency planning all shift at once.
Doc Keller’s medical concerns and the broader dust problem (including LRRS) sit downstream of the same reality: the air the crew breathes is a managed resource, not an unlimited background condition.
Power Through the Night
Power is the second margin that never relaxes.
During the lunar day, solar arrays charge the battery banks that will carry the station through the long night. The architecture is deliberately straightforward — the same basic solar-plus-storage approach used on modern spacecraft — pushed to the limit by fourteen days of darkness. Non-essential loads are cut. Heating is zoned. Lighting drops to what is required. The batteries themselves must be kept warm enough to function, which means waste heat and limited active heating become part of the power budget rather than separate concerns.
Early Power Systems at Conrad Station were built around exactly this cycle. The long night is not an emergency. It is a scheduled test of whether the margins were calculated correctly.
Water and the Closed Loop
Water remains both life support and economic pressure. Recycling recovers most of what the crew uses, but losses still accumulate. Every liter that must be replaced is mass that either came from Earth or must be accounted for in local reserves. The same three-day lag that governs spare parts governs water resupply. Aggressive recycling is not an environmental preference. It is how the station stays solvent in mass and in time.
The Overlap
These systems do not fail in isolation.
A power shortfall threatens the crackers, the recyclers, and the thermal control that keeps both people and batteries alive. A dust or contamination event that forces higher filtration loads increases power demand. A medical situation that increases oxygen use tightens the air margin and may require the crackers to run harder. The long lunar night simply removes the option of solar recovery while those interactions play out.
In Thunder Moon Tussle and the wider Fabulae Lunae stories, characters rarely lecture about life support. They live inside its constraints. They watch the numbers. They defer non-essential work. They treat an offline cracker or a narrowing power margin as the kind of problem that can kill people before any official help can arrive.
The Operational Reality
Life support margins are the quiet background of every other decision at Conrad Station. EVA planning, shift schedules, medical protocols, and even the social life under the skylight in Alex’s Bar all assume that air, water, and power will still be there at the end of the next cycle.
When the margins are healthy, the station feels ordinary. When they tighten, everything else becomes secondary.
The Moon does not negotiate. The buffers are all the negotiation the crew gets.
